5 Things to Know Before Chartering in the BVI

Chartering a yacht in the BVI is one of those must-do items you need to check off your list. Let us give you five pointers you should know before starting your adventure to charter a yacht in the BVI.

how to charter a yacht

1) How to pick the right yacht for your vacation.

What is your expectation and do you have sailing experience are the main considerations. Other than cost, the style and size of the boat will need to match your expectations. A family or close friends may have a great time on a 40ft Catamaran, however, eight adults all wanting some space will be happier on a Catamaran 45ft or bigger, with four queen births and ensuites as well as plenty of lounging areas.

Even if you have sailing experience, you may want to consider a skipper or even a full crew with an All-inclusive charter, a local guide, and someone to help run the boat. Want to know the difference between a bareboat and an all-inclusive experience, see our latest article here .

2) When to go.

High season runs December through March when the BVI has sunny skies, warm breezes, and little rain, but it does attract the most visitors, just as well you are on your own floating hotel so you can choose to mingle with the crowds or find your piece of paradise to just relax.  Summer can be a good time to go with fewer tourists but the weather can be mixed with tropical rainstorms.   Hurricane season is officially June through November, and while most hurricanes pass through the Caribbean in September it is something to consider, we always recommend travel insurance to cover the costs if anything should happen.

3) What’s included.

Depending on whether you choose a bareboat, add a skipper, or go all-inclusive, costs vary. A bareboat will be the cheapest base option, however, on top of the boat cost, you will need to pay for fuel, cleaning, and local taxes plus provisions for the boat. If you want an adventure week with the wind in your hair, pulling the lines to make your sailboat go, then this can be a great vacation. Want to relax a little more and not worry about navigation, then a crew is your best option.

Boatjump will help you choose and plan your perfect yacht vacation by understanding your needs, we will handpick a selection of boats for you to choose and help you plan and it won’t cost you a dollar.

4) How to get there

The BVI capital, Tortola, does not have direct flights from North America; however, getting to the BVI is still easy via a connection from either Puerto Rico, Antigua, St Martin, or St Thomas. Most US travelers make their way through St Thomas; where it is a short ferry ride across to the BVI. Alternatively, with an all-inclusive charter, you can board your boat just a short trip from the airport and get underway; your skipper will even check you into BVI immigration while you relax onboard.
