Boatjump

Essentials Before You Set Sail

Based on the experiences of 40,000 users like you, here are the key points you absolutely must understand to ensure everything goes smoothly from now until the end of your browsing session.

45% of our customers hire a skipper so they can enjoy a stress-free vacation. For the skipper to perform their duties properly, it is essential that:

They have their own cabin.
You always follow their instructions; they know when and where to anchor based on weather conditions, the number of boats, and all factors that may affect the safety of the vessel and the crew.
Provide him with adequate meals—that is, the same as the rest of the crew. When you go out to a restaurant on shore, you have two options:
Give him $30–40 so he can eat at another establishment.
Invite him to join you for lunch or dinner off the boat.

Occasionally, some users request the skipper’s contact information in advance. It is important to keep in mind that skippers are working with other clients, and this can distract them from their duties on board.

Some owners do not provide contact information until check-in, although most assign a skipper days in advance; therefore, if necessary, you can request this information from us within the last week before boarding. From experience, this is more than enough time to discuss your expectations for the trip.

Keep in mind that skippers are accustomed to dealing with clients of different nationalities; the vast majority communicate in English and adapt as much as possible to the profile of the passengers on board (families, groups of friends, more or less experienced…).

It is essential, as noted in the quote, that the skipper has their own cabin—whether a double cabin or a crew cabin—provided it is properly designated in the boat’s layout within your Boatjump quote. Here’s an example:

Great! She’ll help make your daily life on board more comfortable.

What are her duties? In recent years, the main tasks she is expected to perform have become standard:

  • Cleaning common areas.
  • Preparing two simple meals a day. As you can imagine, they aren’t professional chefs, but they can cook simple dishes given the limitations of boat kitchens, which aren’t like those at home.
Cleaning used kitchenware, as well as dishes and cutlery.

Most customers who book a hostess also include a skipper’s service. It’s important to note that they have separate sleeping quarters, so they must have access to two of the boat’s cabins; therefore, it’s essential that you review the cabin layout diagram included in your quote.

Regarding their meals, the arrangement works exactly the same as it does for the skipper.

If the boat you’ve booked is equipped with air conditioning, it will help you stay more comfortable on board during some of the hottest days of summer.

It’s important to keep in mind that, for obvious reasons, it isn’t as powerful as an air conditioner on land, and since it runs directly on the boat’s batteries, if you’re not in port, you should use it only during the hottest parts of the day.

The extras for your boat are set directly by the owner and are divided into the following categories:

  • Mandatory extras to be paid at the time of booking.
  • Mandatory extras to be paid at the destination.
  • Not included.

Everything is clearly detailed in your Boatjump quote, and we recommend that you specify which non-included extras you’ll need as soon as possible. Why? The owner’s inventory is limited, and these items may no longer be available later on because another user has already reserved them.

Examples? Sure, here are the most common ones:

  • Paddleboard. If your owner offers it, don’t wait until days or weeks before your departure to request it.
  • Outboard motor, sheets, and towels: If any or all of these extras are listed as not included, request them as soon as possible so the base can make a note of it. Over 97% of users book these extras.

How do I know the exact amount I’ll need to pay when I arrive at the base? Don’t worry—it’s all detailed at the bottom of your one-page quote. Here’s an example:

If you’d like to do this in advance, it’s important to know that many owners aren’t able to assist with the process. In any case, over 80% of our clients prefer to go to a supermarket near the marina themselves. Why?

  • It allows you to see the products in person at the supermarket.
  • Usually, the group splits into those who handle check-in and those who take care of the shopping.
  • You avoid potential logistical issues (late deliveries, damage to refrigerated items, or incorrect distribution of those items).

Congratulations! Many users have avoided major headaches caused by unfortunate incidents on board. It’s important to remember, as explained in the product description, that once you arrive at the port, you must still pay the full security deposit to the owner, and if the deposit is withheld, you should request that Boatjump activate the service retroactively.

Those of you who have previously chartered boats for full weeks in the Mediterranean are surely well aware of this, but in any case, please remember that the vast majority of owners require you to return to port the afternoon before (usually Friday afternoon, if it’s a Saturday-to-Saturday charter).

This has been standard practice for decades, as it allows for a proper check-out and, in the event the boat needs technical repairs, provides the minimum time required to source parts and carry out the necessary repairs.

Is the arrival time at the port flexible? No, and here’s why. Among other reasons, owners often hire a diver to inspect the underwater hull of their boats, so they need all vessels to be back in port by that time.

Most boats in the Mediterranean (and there are over 17,000 listed on the website) include mooring for the first and last nights. However, if this information isn’t specified in your quote and you have concerns, please don’t hesitate to contact us.
Can I use the berth during the charter week? Normally not, but if you ask, the owner may be able to arrange it at the cost determined by the port.

Once you’ve paid for your reservation and Boatjump has confirmed with the owner that everything is in order, we’ll send you a RESERVATION CONFIRMATION email from bookings@boatjump.com. In that email, we’ll provide a link where you can enter the crew’s personal information.

When should I fill it out? As soon as possible! This way, you’ll avoid receiving periodic reminders from the system.

If you’re still unsure whether there will be any changes or if you’ll be adding a passenger, don’t worry—the main thing is to submit the bulk of the list first. Then, once you’re at the port, you can notify us, if required, that any passengers (other than the skipper) have been added or changed.

If you are the one steering the boat, remember to make sure your license is valid for the region where you’ll be sailing and the boat you’ve rented.

IMPORTANT! You can share the link to the sailing form with your crew via WhatsApp or email, and have each person fill in their own information. Keep in mind that to save your information, you must click SAVE, and only once the list of all crew members has been completed should you click SAVE AND SEND TO BOATJUMP

Once you have paid for your reservation, and Boatjump has verified with the owner that everything is in order, we will send you a RESERVATION CONFIRMED email from bookings@boatjump.com. In the email, you will find the outstanding balance, the payment deadline, our bank details, and/or a payment link if you wish to pay by credit card.

IMPORTANT! If you pay by credit card, Boatjump is not authorized to charge more than $10,000 per reservation.

More than 90% of boat owners will issue an invoice in the company’s name if requested, but to be 100% sure, we recommend that you let us know when you make your reservation so we can confirm that there are no issues.

The rental invoice will be issued by the service provider upon disembarkation, so the easiest thing to do is to request it at that time.
